Milan may be all about the glitz and glamour but you can definitely enjoy the city without spending a lot of money. There are many ways on how you can save on food, transportation, and accommodation. So if you’re planning for a budget trip to Milan, here are our tips on how to save money and time.
- Avail of the Student or Senior Discounts
Whether you’re a student or a senior, you could avail of the discounted rates on some of Milan’s most famous museums and attractions. Simply present your ID upon entry and your ticket will be discounted.
- Avoid Eating at the Station Square
The restaurants at the Station Square are tourist traps and the food is significantly overpriced. So avoid eating at this place. Instead, walk a few miles and look for local restaurants that serve authentic and affordable Italian food.
- Consider Couchsurfing
Not everyone may like the idea of Couchsurfing but it’s no doubt the best way to save money on your accommodation in Milan. This is also a great way to meet and interact with locals and find out more about the local culture.
- Find a Budget Hotel
If you don’t like the idea of Couchsurfing, then look for budget hotels. Although Milan can be really expensive, there are lots of affordable budget hotels outside the city center so better check these out. There are also homestays in Milan that are more affordable than a regular hotel.
- Don’t Take the Taxis
Just like with the other cosmopolitan cities, taxis in Milan can get really expensive. So if you’re trying to save money, avoid taking the taxi when traveling from one place to another. This is especially true at night where there’s an added surcharge.
- Ride the Radiobus
Radiobuses run until the early morning so ride these buses instead of the taxi when going out at night. Each trip costs less than €3, which is way cheaper than a taxi. The last trip is at 2 AM so it’s great for those who want to enjoy the nightlife during their Milan travel.
- Drink Water from the Tap
The water in Italy is absolutely safe for drinking so take advantage of this to save money from having to purchase bottled water. Bring a water bottle with you and refill it from the tap. You’re not only saving money, but you also get to help save the environment, too!
- Get a City Pass
If you will be doing lots of sightseeing in Milan, get yourself a City Pass. You can either go for the Milan Pass or Milano Card. Both cards will give you discounts and free entry at some of the city’s top attractions and museums. Some passes also cover the hop on hop off bus tours. Click here forMilan bus tours comparison.
- Visit the Free Sights
You don’t really need to spend lots of money when sightseeing in Milan. There are a few sights in the city that are absolutely free for you to visit, such as the Church of Santa Maria presso San Satiro, Via Speronari, and Leonardo’s. Also, by simply walking around the various piazzas, you’ll already come across many interesting sights.
